Blindside: Taking the video out of the game

Aaron Rasmussen and Michael T. Astolfi are trying to take the video out of the game. With their project, Blindside, they aim to create an audio adventure to rival that of any text or visual one.

Inspired by the time Aaron spent being blind after a chemical accident, the game is about a couple, Case and Dawn, who wake up to blindness and must navigate their world using only their hearing. With your help, they will come to "uncover why they can no longer see, what's outside eating people, and what they are going to do about it."

Under development on the Unity 3D platform, Aaron and Michael promise iterations for the PC, Mac and possibly even mobile markets coming in January 2012 with their first 45 minute episode.

Their Kickstarter page has more details as well as a video explaining what they are doing, how they are doing it and how you can help. There is even a small audio clip from the game too.

What do you think? Is this an untapped market of audio navigation adventures for the visually impaired or something more? Could this game, just by playing it, teach us more about ourselves and how we take our vision for granted?

Back in February, I promoted an article about a game that does the exact same thing. It's called Papa Sangre: http://bitmob.com/articles/let-sonics-tell-a-story-or-1d-gaming

Cool. It's neat that gaming is being extended beyond relying on graphics for story-telling and is expanding into new variations of the form. If I had an iOS device, I would try Papa Sangre. Blindside, with its PC release, might be my only way to try a game of this nature.
