Creepy Pokémon Tale Made Real

A week or so ago, Tiny Cartridge ran a story about an eerie Pokémon Red ROM hack that played out more like a Japanese horror movie than an role-playing game.

In the horror hack, the player acquires a Pokémon known only as Pokémon Ghost. It is a hacked sprite of the ghosts you meet in the Lavender Town tower before you get the item to let you see Ghastly and Haunter properly. It has one attack, which is to curse people and opposing Pokémon. You can never remove Ghost from your party.

Cursing an opponent means killing them. Cursed trainers turn into headstones, and their Pokémon die in battle. Eventually, you've killed everyone, and Ghost comes after you when you make it back to your home in Pallet town....

This, thankfully, is just a hack -- until now. A group of ROM hackers plan to make two versions of this haunting game, one that mirrors the original tale and another with more creative twists.

Read the full scary Pokémon story here. If my description made you uneasy, reading the supposed first-hand account is even worse.

Yes! I read about this, and thought it sounded crazy. Glad to see it'll be a real thing soon! I wonder if that original hack really did ever exist, though.

This hack really creeped me out when I first read it. But I still find it cool that people were able to make slight tweaks to the game and turn it into a radically different experience.

While I found the story pretty meh, its nice to see someone making it into something more.
