Don't Call Me A Fanboy: Why the PS3 is Right for Me

Let me be clear, my opinions are well thought out. I am educated on the subject, probably more so then you. So please, do not tell me I am wrong. I have had to tell people something along these lines on numerous occasions, all because I mentioned that I want a PS3 and not a 360.

Yes, I still have yet to join the "next gen" of gaming. It's not because I don't want to, or can't decide which console to get, but because of life. When the PS3 and Wii hit I had plans of waiting in line for both and selling the PS3 for double or triple the price, then getting another one later down the road when you could find them in stores. It didn't work out that way though.

But I got in line for the Wii anyway, because my fiancee wanted it and when the woman in your life wants a gaming related item you don't say no. So we got a Wii, but since then life has hit full force. We got married, and then got pregnant pretty much immediately afterwards. Both of those things as it turns out are quite expensive. As a result, I still have no PS3.

Originally I wanted one because of the PS2, but obviously things have changed since then. The stigma among almost all in the gaming world is that the 360 is the best console around. When I mention that I still want a PS3 to someone who plays games, they begin to launch into what a mistake that is and tell me about how much better the 360 is.

We may be into our 4th year of this console generation and I still don't have a system, but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about. I deliver newspapers, which means I am in my car for at least 6 hours a day. I listen to a ton of podcasts in that time, and a lot of them are video game related.

So what has made me decide that the PS3 is still for me? Simple, I don't have a lot of time to game right now. Like I said, we have a kid. Handhelds work out alright because I can be in whatever room the kid is in and I can usually turn it off instantly if I need to, but going upstairs to play on a console is a different story.

So what do I want to play in that little time I have? I want to play the best games possible. The ones that will probably go down as some of my favorites of all time.

Right now, I've got my eyes on Heavy Rain and The Last Guardian doing just that. Sure I have fun with action type games, but I'd be just fine having God of War and Uncharted instead of Dead Rising and Lost Planet.

So don't tell me I'm making a mistake, and don't call me a fanboy. I don't care how many stacks of good games there are on 360, I don't have the time to play all of those and I want to play the handful of PS3 games more anyway. I've made my decision based on what is right for me. Thats not being a fanboy, thats just being a smart consumer.

Yeah. I already use my psp as much if not more then my ds to play old ps1 rpgs and such. And can't you remote play all of your ps3 download games on psp? If so then it'd expand my selection even more.

I kind of want a pspgo but I'm happy with my 1000 series psp. I'll just need to get a 16gb card for it as my 2gb is way maxed out, mainly because of the behemoth that is ff7.

I'm sorry to say you haven't exactly formulated an argument beyond vaguely saying "I listen to podcasts", which are not unbiased sources of information. I'm not trying to flame you, please don't take it the wrong way.

When you try to debate this information, try to bring up actual facts, like failure rates or free online play on the PSN vs XBL Gold, or exclusives like Little Big Planet, actual advantages of the PS3 over the 360 (although bringing up exclusives probably isn't useful since the 360 has a pretty good list as well and this argument is too subjective to be useful).

@Patrick - Thats because the point of the article wasn't to argue that the PS3 is better than the 360, because it probably isn't. The point of the article was to explain why the PS3 is a better choice for me. I brought up podcasts as a way to convey how I am educated on the subject and am not just making the choice because I liked the ps2.

And yes, podcasts are usually biased. Except they are usually biased in favor of the 360. In fact I think every podcast I listen to would probably pick 360 if they could only have one console.

I would have brought up "actual facts" if I wanted to debate the merits of the PS3 over the 360. But thats not what I was doing. I was discussing why I feel its better for me and me alone. Thats why my "facts" are facts that relate to me.

@Alex-My first comment was purely sarcasm, however in your response to Patrick, you are really painting the picture that you are a fanboy.

In your OP, you state you are just being a smart consumer, yet in your response you say the 'facts" you use only pertain to you, "My facts..."

I have facts too with that logic, the fact that xbox 360 is teh sux0rz! (That's not a fact is my point)

Also to say that every podcast you listen to is "for" the 360 is very fanboy-ish, and even if in reality they are, doesn't change the fact if you are a fanboy or not.

Uusally if you have to declare in some preable of a post or comment "I'm not a fanboy, but...", you usually are a fanboy.

You got it right about wanting a console for the games, and not the console.

I think you are making the right decision Alex, and I have both a 360 and a PS3! If it was two years ago I would have written that the 360 is the only way to go, but looking towards the future, the games for the PS3 are more exciting.....GOD OF F$#KING WAR!!!....THE LAST GUARDIAN.... I still own my PS2 to play the predecessors of those two games.

Here are a few things I like about the PS3 (besides the games):

-the internet being accessible

-the ability to burn movies of my own right to the hard drive

-this is my favorite - I have a 160GB ipod loaded with films and tv shows. I can hook it up to the PS3, select it and press display all, then go to ipod control and then music, and then I can not only watch anything on my ipod through my PS3, but I can burn any films or tv shows directly to the PS3!!! Awesome

-Like Toby said, the PSP-PS3 connectivity - I can play FFVII on my PSP and then get home, transfer the save file, and continue on the big screen!

To avoid the flames of fanboyism, what games interest you most on 360 that you cannot play on a PC or PS3?

I just finished a post that took me thirty minutes to write and it magically deleted itself........
So I'll just sway I made my decision to get a PS3 based around a single game: Disgaea 3. Yup, I'm that one guy.

@David - I knew your original post was sarcastic. I think you're misreading my tone throughout some of the article, as well as my response to Patrick.

Everytime I used the word fanboy in the article, I was basically just mocking the term as I feel its really only thrown around when someone doesn't have a defense for their views. And everytime I used the word fact in my response to Patrick, I was kind of being a dick. Which I should probably apologize for, I was in kind of a pissy mood this morning.

Nothing in my article is a fact, and thats the whole point. We can list fact after fact about why 360 is better, or why ps3 is better. The point of my article was to simply say why I FEEL like the ps3 is a better choice for me. When I used the word fact in response to Patrick, I was sort of being a dick about being misunderstood in that way. Sorry Patrick! Hug? Weird? Uh...ok, handshake?

And I don't in the least think that the podcasts I listen to are unfairly hard on ps3. I understand every gripe anybody has about it, and they gripe just as much when 360 is screwed up. If I could afford both consoles I would have them both in a second. For the first 2 or so years after the start of the new gen of consoles, I was going to buy a 360. It was only after the birth of my kid that I started to decide that the little time I had to game might be better spent with the successors to the games I loved the most last gen.

@Lance - I don't know if I have to prove anything but if I had a 360 and lots of time I would definitely play Dead Rising, Lost Planet, I would have played Ninja Gaiden, Bioshock and Overlord but those are sort of null at this point since they've come over. Uuuh I can't think of more right now as I feel light headed and should probably go try to resolve that. But that was enough to counteract all the ps3 titles I listed. Oh yeah! Alan Wake too. There we go.
