Give Peace A Chance... In Video Games (Taking the Plunge)

The first articles I wrote for Bitmob were for a writing prompt called On the Contrary.  I'm pretty sure I saw Bitmob on Facebook first, became a fan, and then came over and visited the site and found the writing prompt.  I thought, "This sounds pretty cool," and decided I'd try and argue why video games are too violent, since I've pretty much had my fill of violence, given the way the world is today, with war and everything else.

I have to say though, that this started when I was hanging out with some friends, drinking and having a good time, when someone suggested we play Modern Warfare or something, and I just couldn't even pretend to be having a good time.

So the idea had been in my head for awhile, and when I saw the writing prompt I thought I'd give it a try.  At some point when I was writing, that 'war what is it good for' song came on, and after he said "Nothing!" I said to myself, "Unless you're playing video games."  I had to include the song in the piece after that, and got really excited about what I was doing.

But there were 2 big problems I started to realize after I had just about finished both articles.  One, I was really writing about war, not necessarily violence.  And two, right now, video games are so diverse there are cooking games!  I had come to the conclusion that war, violence, or whatever, was not monopolizing the industry.  There are games for everyone!

I guess I learned that war really hadn't taken over the video game universe like I had initially thought.

"On the Contrary" is my favorite writing prompt so far. Sadly, I never had the time to contribute to it. Despite the deadline being long since passed, I plan on writing an entry anyway (as soon as I think of a topic that is!)

Maybe it's due to my recent avoidance of Facebook, but I had no idea people actually found things on Facebook first.I know I never found anything in that mass of links and likes and pokes and requests. But if someone could discover Bitmob through it, maybe it's not so bad.

As for your topic, it sounds like you had a bit of an epiphany mid-article, but here's something to consider. While there is a very diverse landscape in gaming, almost every top ten NPD game not branded "Nintendo" or "Madden" is focused on violence.

Maybe from a slightly different viewpoint, your original idea still holds water. It'd be interesting to see someone further explore the subject.

Thanks for participating in the call-out!

In retrospect, I suppose it was a bit of a miracle I found Bitmob on Facebook, but I'm glad I did!  I still go back and forth on the violence issue... it's a tough one.
