Jay-Z(elda): Hip hop and a Game Boy

Jay-ZeldaHey, I'm still making my mash-up of hip-hop beats, Jay-Z, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, appropriately named “Jay-Zelda: Beat's Awakening.” I've been working on it off-and-on for the past couple of years but recently decided that it's time to finally finish what I've started….

I went over the dozen or so tracks from the project -- most of which are about 50%-99% complete – and realized that a lot of these songs are too cool to let rot on an old external hard drive. So now, I've decided to polish up what I've got; weave it together into a continuous DJ-style mix; whip up some album art, liner notes, etc.; and release it sometime by late August.

I want the flow of the beats and remixes to play out like the Game Boy classic. Particularly, I think of how Link's adventures take him all over Koholint Island, and each location has a song that transitions into the next. Note that this isn't suppose to be some kind of definitive soundtrack that tells the whole story of the game or Jay-Z's musical career, but instead, I'm trying to craft my own reinterpretation of the two bodies of work.

Of course, no update would be complete without a sample, so for your listening pleasure, I've included three songs: "Roc's Feather" (the track that started the idea for this whole project), "Dirty Forest," and an instrumental titled "Cave."

If you want to hear the completed version, make sure to follow the Bitmob Twitter account (@Bitmob) and me (@Aquma), and I'll send out a message when I put it up on the site. Enjoy!

There's *almost* no such thing as a bad mash-up. Nicely done, Alejandro!

I've heard a lot of bad ones. This is alright, I like "Cave" the best so far. Can't wait to hear more.

Awesome. I was a little worried that people would only want mash-ups and wouldn't like the instrumentals.

Very well done sir! I'm not a Jay-Z fan, but this is pretty bad ass.

Much obliged. What rappers are you a bigger fan of?

I'm into kind of the underground sound, like Danger Mouse, the Roots, Jurassic 5, Common, etc. They've got great beats and great lyrics.

This makes me want to open up my Acid 5.0 program again. What do you use?

Word. I'm definitely a fan of all of those artists, too. That "Ghetto Dreams" track from Common and Nas is amazing. As for music making, I currently use Logic Pro for Mac, but I was messing with Pro Tools for a while.

Sounds pretty awesome even though I'm not much of a rap or Jay-Z fan.

Okay, Alejandro, I need all of this. Like, yesterday. Jay-Z is one of my favorite rappers, and Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game by far. Great stuff.

Hey! I dig this! Gimme more!

Speaking of mash-ups, anybody heard that new Wugazi record (Wu-Tang + Fugazi)?

More is on the way!

My friend linked me to the Wugazi mash-up but I haven't taken the time to listen to it yet. What's your take on it?

I can't listen to Jay-Z anymore ever since I discovered his acts of plagiarism. Some people defend him by saying he's paying homage to the artists, but the term "biting" wouldn't exist in hiphop if it were simply that.

do you have a link to some examples? Or do you know some off hand?

There's a video on youtube called "swagger jacker" just add Jay-Z to the search and it should appear. They have one for Lil Wayne also. Nas has a song called Ether and one of the lines say, "How many of Biggie's rhymes is gonna come out your fat lips?"

The video was a little long, but it was certainly entertaining. I recognize a lot of Jay-Z's homage paying when I listen, but when it's all laid out like that, it's kind of ridiculous.
