Picture of Jonathan Oyama at home

I am Jonathan Oyama, a 26-year-old graduate from California State University Long Beach. I live in Los Angeles County, in the Torrance suburbs. I'm a freelance writer, but I'm hoping that a newspaper or magazine will hire me in the near future.

I am currently a freelance writer for Centerfield Media, but my official job title is "independent contractor." I spend time writing oddball hair removal articles for hairremoval.org. Although hair removal is generally not my cup of tea, my weekly salary is much more consistent now.

I used to write articles as an intern for the Laguna Beach Coastline Pilot in 2010. However, due to financial cutbacks, I was laid off. I also used to write many articles for Patch.com, a community news website that publishes local news in small towns and cities all over America. Unfortunately, the parent company, AOL, is pretty tough on its writers and editors. I don't really write stories for them anymore as a freelance writer.

Thankfully, I take refuge in playing video games and watching Japanese animated shows and television, also known as anime. I guess I have an attachment to anime and Japanese video games because I'm a Japanese American. Even though I'm technically more American than Japanese, I'm drawn to these Japanese characters for some reason. Maybe it has to do with the way they dress, or their smart, cyber-punk attitude.

My favorite game is Persona 4, a Japanese RPG that is still somewhat underrated. Although it is more than two years old, the amount of depth and social interaction makes it one of the most memorable adventures of all time.

I also play various first-person shooters. Although I'm not a big Halo or Call of Duty fan, I love playing Portal and Mirror's Edge. My favorite, though, is Bioshock. All the humongous special effects and beautiful graphics blew me away.

I used to compete heavily in fighting games in college, but I always hated the controllers. The Playstation 2 controller's D-pad especially wore some of the skin off of my thumb. I almost stopped playing fighting games completely because of the awful controllers of the current-gen systems. Once I found an excellent third-party gamepad though, I couldn't stop playing Blazblue. It's my number one fighting game so far.

I'm always itching to play more Japanese RPGs. I doubt that the genre will disappear anytime soon, because the visual flair and the storytelling style is much deeper than many American RPGs. On the other hand, Square-Enix should start some different RPG franchises. After playing through seven of the Final Fantasy games, I really hope that I'll never live to see Final Fantasy 52 anytime soon.

I hope that the readers enjoy the rest of my articles, because I love writing for this website. It's one of the few places where I can vent out my passion for video games.

Glad to see Baccano! on your list.  Isaac and Miria are two of my favorite anime characters ever.

Yeah, those two are always pretty funny. I liked watching them as they beat other gangsters up in New York Yankees uniforms.

Can't say I'm a fan, but I do enjoy old-school anime like Vampire Hunter D and Ninja Scroll. I also disagree that JRPGs' storytelling is "deeper" than its American counterpart. I'd argue that Mass Effect 2's narrative is as multi-layered as anything from Japan.

That said, JRPGs constitute some of my favorite games-- Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, FF Tactics, etc. I especially love seeing the Japanese interpret our myths, legends, and religious teachings.

I agree on Final Fantasy. The last iteration I played through was FF 7. I'm dying for a proper FF Tactics sequel (not that kiddie GBA crap). I had to "settle" for Tactics Ogre on the PSP.

I hope you break into the publishing business! Your passion shines in your writing, and employers can't ignore that forever.

Actually, I think the only modern-day American RPG I've played is Borderlands. And I'm not sure if that's a fair representation of the best that America has to offer.

I haven't played many American RPGs with actual stories. The last American one I fully enjoyed was Quest for Glory 2: Trial By Fire. Go ahead and laugh...it's been a while.

The only other new American RPGs I've played after that were Betrayal at Krondor and Diablo 1. I like Diablo but I didn't really connect too much with it. I like stories, but Diablo doesn't really have much of a story. As for Betrayal, that was too hard for me to even figure out.

So, uh, you can go ahead and laugh at my miserable track record on American RPGs.

I was never a fan of Diablo-style dungeon crawlers. I didn't even like Mass Effect (controls were too clunky). But I loved ME2; the story, music, dialogue, and gameplay really nailed it.

I used to like Diablo, until I realized that I was only doing small variations of the same thing. Borderlands made it easier, because I was shooting enemies instead of clicking infinite times. But yeah, I prefer stories, good music and whatnot.

Props for treading the freelance path, sir. It's a hard and lonely road. Glad you're here!

Thanks! I'd work at an actual publication if someone would hire me for once. I'm grateful to earn any salary in this age of the economic recession.

Whoops! I accidentally listed The Matrix in "favorite games." I fixed it. (whew!)

I don't want hair on my ass. How do you suggest I remove it? Also, are you on Twitter?

Hmm...You could probably use the Philips Norelco Bodygroom Pro. It probably has a good attachment to put on the shaver and it's a pretty cheap alternative to many of the more expensive methods.

On the other hand, you could also use laser hair removal to get rid of it permanently. Of course, that could cost up to $500. If you have money to burn though, you could pop in for a few laser appointments.

Yeah, I'm on Twitter too. My screen name is jjoyama.

Anime, you say? Are you good at producing them too? Because I'd love to see a Mega Man X cartoon done right. I couldn't stand X4 and X7. MMX 8 was alright, and Maverick Hunter was slighlty cool. The animations were vibrant, but the voice acting gave me a headache.

Hahaha. I wish I could produce them as good as those anime studios. All the anime for Mega Man 8 onward is weird. I like laughing at the American-ized Mega Man show, though. Roll kept getting sidelined by everyone in that show. Lol.
