Potent Portable - SNK vs Capcom: The Match of the Millenium

Recently I had the privilege of briefly owning Street Fighter IV on my Xbox 360.  While I found it to be an excellent fighting game I just did not have the time needed to make it worth my while and learn the game proper.  But my brief re-encounter with Street Fighter made me decide to dig into my personal archives and play one of Capcom's, and their 2D fighting game rival, SNK's finest fan-service titles, SNK vs Capcom: The Match of the Millennium on my Neo Geo Pocket Colour.

A little background for those of you out there who are new to gaming.  Many who were even gaming in 1999 probably missed the Neo Geo Pocket Color all together.  It was not long for store shelves as SNK recalled all the hardware and games midway through 2000.  It simply was no match for the power of Nintendo, the GameBoy, and Pokemon.  While its library was fairly limited it was famous for its collection of 2D fighters and its ability to link with Sega's Dreamcast console.  The greatest of the 2D fighters in my opinion would be the above mentioned SNK vs Capcom: TheMatch of the Millennium.

What set this game apart was that not only did this game pit some of Capcom's greatest fighters against their SNK counterparts, but also it had a variety of mini games grouped together in what was called the Olympic mode.  In this mode we got even more fan service from such venerable gaming franchises as Ghost n' Goblins and Metal Slug!

Back to the heart of this game, thefighting.  After warming up with Street Fighter IV I felt right at home returning to this game after a nine year absence.  I took Ryu and was immediately able to pull off his power and ultra moves and quickly cruise through his story mode, one again thanks to my most recent Street Fighter experience.  The Neo Geo Pocket Color's control stick was one of the finest ever made on a handheld and worked perfect for fighting games such as this.  The lack of a backlight for the screen and the fact that the system only supported two face buttons limited this handheld.  All in all it was still is a neat little package.

The Neo Geo Pocket Color  was a handheld system few played and even fewer own.  While these days it serves me as mainly my alarm clock, once in a blue moon I will take it for a spin and play one of the several games i still own for it.  Neo Geo Pocket Color, we hardly knew ye!

I always wanted a Neo Geo Pocket Color! I wasn't interested in many of the games, to be honest, but just thought it was a cool hand held.

I didn't know ye at all, but I wish I did. It's too bad Pokemon choked out Neo Geo Pocket Color.

I love my NGPC. I actually picked up some rpg's for it not long ago - Faselei and BioMotor Unitron, games I wasn't interested in back in the day. I still have a whole bunch of fighting games, including this one. I think the NGPC was the only gaming system that got me to enjoy fighters, most likely because of the outstanding joystick.

This post made me sad for the end of the NGPC though. I remember the day it went under - amazingly, I was caught completely by surprise!
