You didn't really think Microsoft's newly named Kinect and PlayStation Move was for you, did you?
Although there will be games targeted at the hardcore - particularly on Move - make no mistake: These devices are for your mom. And your mom's mom. The only question is, will it be too little too late? We really won't know this until at the very least after the holiday season, and probably longer.
Nintendo's Wii has retirement homes locked down. Trust me: My 88-year-old aunt owns at Wii Sports Bowling.
Perhaps there is room for Kinect and Move. Kinect, for example, would be quite easier to use for a four-year-old than using a Wiimote. My daughter - who's four - loves playing Wii, but still struggles with the idea she needs to point the Wiimote at the screen for it to do what she wants. It's also tough in Wii Sports Bowling, which requires her to hold the B button in her windup then release it when she wants to let go of the ball.
All of these problems, in theory, should be solved with Kinect. If she wants to pet a baby tiger - and let's face it, who doesn't - she can do that just as she would with a real one. The lack of buttons makes for a very user-friendly experience that will enable Kinect to reach a broad age demographic.
Sony affirmed the wide reach of motion at their press conference on Tuesday.
"With PlayStation Move, your mom can make 'your mom' jokes after she takes you to school in table tennis," said Sony's fictitious "Director of (insert department here)" Kevin Butler.
Now gamers - whether they're hardcore or casual - can enjoy motion-based games with high-definition graphics, something Nintendo still seems intent on ignoring for the time being. The problem is, most people playing those casual Wii games could care less about HDTV games.
Take a look at the Wiis hooked up at retirement homes. It's more than likely they're using the standard-def composite cables to connect to the TV, even if it is an HDTV. So these people, and I suspect the younger crowd (meaning people in their 40s and 50s) are playing in glorious 480i and loving it.
So, as usual, it will have to be more than just graphics that draw people to these new motion platforms.
But make no mistake, Microsoft and Sony had to do this. There are many licensed kids games branded "family games," but very few of them actually encourage several people to play at a time - unlike Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort.
For me, I always prefered playing games on my Xbox 360 - by myself. When the family's over, I wipe the dust off the Wii and we have a blast on exotic Wuhu Island. As a hardcore gamer, part of me weeps at the Wii's crappy visuals until I see how much fun everyone is having. That reminds me what Wii is all about, and what hopefully Kinect and Move will be, too.
