One of my fondest memories as a kid was running downstairs Christmas morning and opening the biggest present I could see. The year was 1998 and I had stayed up in vain hoping to see Santa so I could make sure my gift was in the bag. Nevermind the fact that to see him would most likely have me placed on the naughty list I had to make sure. Luckily he didn't let me down and on that day I received a Nintendo 64. I remember looking at it in awe and imagining all the great games I was going to play. Of course at that time my idea of games consisted of the Holy Trinity. The Trinity being Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. So imagine how let down I felt when the only game I received was a used copy of GoldenEye 007. Here I was a mere child and I counld't understand what kind of cruel adult would force upon me anything not Nintendo. Of course being a child I decided to to give the cartridge the old blow and throw it in. I never did get around to opening the other game my uncle got me.
There was something almost primal about that game. Even at that age I understood that the game I was playing was unlike anything I had played before. The thing that really got me hooked on the game was the multiplayer. Now I know that it may sound cliche but GoldenEye 007 still has the best multiplayer of all time. Who needs perks and photo-realistic graphics when I have access to the greatest weapon in all of multiplayer gamedom that weapon being The Golden Gun. Even now I remember the heated arguments me and friends would have whenever someone picked up that weapon. Of course when it was your turn to use it their calls of not fair and you can't use that fell upon deaf ears. And of course when someone else got the gun you suddenly remembered saying that gun was off limits.
Even today with access to Call of Duty and Halo I still often find myself pulling out the Nintendo 64 just to play GoldenEye. When I call friends over and ask who wants to play some Goldeneye splitscreen I am immediately buffeted with screams of I call the blue controller as if a controller can somehow bestow magical pwning abilities upon whoever grasps it. How many games can you say still pull you to play them over 10 years after there release? The answer if you are being truthful with yourself can probably be counted on one hand. For many gamers GoldenEye is one of them. That is why I was so ecstatic to hear that Nintendo is rereleasing it on the Wii as a full length retail game. No subpar Virtual Console release but a true remake with added features. How can't this be a good idea? I don't even have a Wii but I know for a fact that I am going to have one before November 2nd. I wonder how many of my friends I can get to skip voting and come to my house for a marathon session of nostalgia? Probably a few but no matter who is there I call Oddjob.
