Bitmob X-Com: Week One: Floaters, Dead Soldiers, and Our First Two Missions

The second episode of Bitmob X-Com is up. Check it out!

X-Com -- the last line of defense against the alien menace. You are the brave men and women who will fight the invaders and drive them from our planet. The organization will arm you with rifles, heavy cannons, and bad language so that your courage knows no bounds. Suit up -- we’re going to war!

After my disappointment with last week's XCOM announcement from 2K, I asked the fine individuals who are a part of the Bitmob community to sign up for a game of X-Com: UFO Defense. Many of you responded to my call-to-arms, and this post is the first in a series of our exploits on the battlefield. Follow the whole adventure with the Bitmob X-Com tag.

But now, on with the game!

After selecting a base location, I queued up new structures: another living quarters, two general stores, a large radar system, and an alien containment facility. I put all these new buildings south of the access lift; eventually, I will move the hangers up to the north end of the base and demolish the living quarters to the right of the lift. Doing so will give us a defensive advantage during base raids.

After ordering new equipment for soldiers and crafts (I like to equip all Interceptors with avalanche missile launchers, since they provide the best range out of the human tech in the game), I hit the time-lapse key and wait for some activity. While the first UFO outruns our interceptors, we’re able to strike the second one.

Details of our first mission, which pits us outgunned and outnumbered against a foe in a significantly advantageous position, follow on page two. Myself, Jeremy LaMont, Daniel Fecteau, Alex Gagne, Tyler Doan, Kenn Quist, James DeRosa, and Nathan Vig compose our initial squad. Read on to find out if we survive to tell the tale!

Uh oh. Pouring one out for me and my dead homies. We fought the good fight: Earf Day, 2010

From beyond the grave I say we stick by our research guns.

Also, I lold at getting shot in the face. Even though the animations aren't context sensitive, I also like to pretend someone got shot in the head or wherever.

Thanks for running this, Rob. :-)

edit: Some of those mods seem really neat.

Well, it was a good fight. I am glad I could at least be a bit helpful in a mission.

I am sure my son- Francis Miller Anderson, Jr.- will want revenge... Even if he is only four weeks old.

I think we should go for the medi-kit or motion sensor... If you feel like letting a corpse vote from the grave.

Hell yeah, after taking two solid hits I still had the balls to go off scouting.  They'll speak of me in hushed tones up in their UFO's.  "The Human Knew No Fear".

Actually, Jeremy, damage is location based in X-Com:

Medi-KitAnd if you watch the video, Tyler totally got shot in the face!

Also, corpses can definitely vote! I want to keep everyone involved, even post-death.

Ooooh this is exciting. Isn't this exciting. I'm excited Hank.

Anyway I say keep going on laser rifles due to their accuracy and lack of ammo. Do stun weapons next.

And when I get out give me the rocket launcher with four incendiary rounds. (3 in the backpack and 1 in the off hand.)

You also might want to think about 2-man teams when moving. One squadmate moves toward cover then crouches. One squadmate facing towards the mover saves most of their timeunits for reaction fire.

And even though it's a ways off, if I survive, put me in the first group for Psych research. Betting I'm at least a 95.

Alas I was unable to get "my shit" together; killed in my prime! Good stuff though, can't wait for the next installment.

Laser Rifles get my vote until plasma becomes a more effective option.

I survived a night of extraterrestrial horror.

Abandon everything! It's got to be Heavy Plasma! Off to an exam.

I'd like to join the team! The damn aliens just raped and killed my family, so now I want REVENGE.

Kenn, thanks for the tips! I definitely try to keep soldiers in pairs, but sometimes it's difficult given the terrain. I'll also have to check your strength...you may not have the ability to carry the rocket launcher. Right now, I'm the only soldier with a stat of 42, which in the minimum requirement for that set up.

Jeremy, I recommend UFO Extender if you have the Collector's Edition of X-Com. The improvements are really worthwhile, especially so if you're looking for additional challenge. XcomUtil is the old standard (and does many of the same things as Extender), and works for both the CE and DOS versions of the game. Both are really easy to use, too.

Some of you didn't vote for a research option. Please do!

I'll get in on this. Enlist me!

Also, voting for lasers. Stay the course.

Damn.. Not a good week for the Doan bros!

I blame my poor performance on the fact that those damn floaters iced my twin bro the mission before. Don't worry, man... Your death gives me the motivation to become the grizzled vet on the team who goes rogue to fulfill my need for revenge!

After seeing so many get injured this week I'm putting my weight behind med kits!

I might as well sign-up. I'll also vote for Laser Rifles because, as someone said, lasers don't need ammo.

We should keep researching laser rifles because their superior power and unlimted ammo will give us a lasting advantage, especially against the earlier foes. After laser rifles we should research the motion scanner to increase our visibility and to make a good profit.

Also, while it is good to cover lots of ground, remember to have at least one man in range of another. That way you can reduce the chance of one being over-powered by aliens.

Also also don't forget about the effectiveness of laser pistols. While they may not be very accurate they  have unlimited ammo and are automatic, making  them vary useful in close-quarters.

Wow, you're definitely not making this easy for yourself! I would get demolished under half of those settings.

I say we stick with laser rifles for this week.

I vote lasers as well.

..That's right, I capped an alien!

I will pour a forty to my fallen comrades...

Stick with the our research until we get the laser rifle.  Then switch to alien alloys.  We need the cool silver hawks armor!!

X-Com Complete $5 on D2D's Spring Sale - http://www.direct2drive.com/promos/spring-sale/

I just bought it. X-Com is hard and not very user friendly. I am going to have to find a good FAQ. Worth $5 for the whole series though!

Juan Moreno reporting for duty and anxious to kick some alien ass, SIR!

Count me in as an eager recruit.

I'm voting lasers. I have some fond memories of the good old

laser rifle. I got a lot of mileage from those babys. I'd suggest

researching medikits next.

Ah! Really late to the party. Haven't had internet time for awhile.

You included me!

...I died.

At least my name ended up bolded in a screenshot! That's more than I could have asked for.

I vote lasers.

I vote alien alloys for the next one. I'd rather have some nice special alien metal between my face and plasma...

...but that's just me.
