By now I presume all of you have read and or seen all about Criterion's new Downloadable burnout game named burnout:crash. If not I'll provide a quick overview, basically it's a down able title that will be released this fall and revolves around the crash mode of previous games. This time however it is played from a top down perspective and can also be controlled with kinect.
This may seem like a massive departure from the series' roots and to be blunt, it is. It's so out there I'm genuinely afraid of whether or not it will be any good. One thing I do feel positive about however is that criterion are taking that risk to make a different game and not rely on there previous success.
Too many game series in the modern day are just iteration after iteration of the same core idea. While there is certainly merit in this method, I mean look at call of duty, I truly believe that the more innovative titles are much more exciting and can sell just as well if not better. When fallout 3 came out many fans were extremely worried by the big changes in store for the series but that was a great design choice and fallout 3 remains my favourite game of all time.
The big question here though is, does the burnout brand carry enough weight to sell a small of the wall xbla title? Personally I hope so. I miss the glory days of new ips and when risk taking was commonplace. Who knows if this sells well they may take more chances with the next true burnout game and who knows what awesome things that may entail...
