If you don't bid on this glorious relic, I'm probably going to buy it. I am one of seven people (at the time this article was written) to place a bid on this Neo Geo Pocket Color store display [via eBay]:

Neo Geo Pocket Color

The amazing thing is that this unit was never actually put on display. I doubt the Neo Geo Pockets are removable, but consider this one step on your way to immortal home arcade glory...or that you're a sad retro collector with a smidge more money than sense. Either way, this is a neat find and well worth keeping an eye on if you want to see how much money someone is willing to drop on outdated and virtually useless technology.

Fun story.

When I was young, the day the Neo Geo Pocket Color became available to purchase, was the same day I got that internet TV thing. I can't remember its name, but it turned your TV into a web browser. I just accidentally stumbled upon an ad for the Neo Geo Pocket Color while surfing the net on my television. Almost instantly, I began to drool and screamed for my mother.

I began to beg for it. And my mother, being the most awesome mother in the world, said yes. We bought it online, and it became the first online purchase we ever made. From that day on, I waited outside for the UPS guy to come every single day. 1 week passed by, then 2, then 3. Finally the day came when he walked up to the house, handed me a package, and asked me to sign.

In a matter of minutes I tore open the package to my brand new Neo Gep Pocket color, the blue army design model. The game I bought with it was Metal Slug. I played that thing for weeks non stop. I loved it. By far the best handheld I ever owned up to that point. I brought it to school one day to show off to friends who isntantly became jealous to my satisfaction. Later in the day, however, tragedy struck.

As I was leaving school I noticed my locker was open. Inside, my Neo Geo Pocket Color was missing. Gone. You want to talk about heart broken? I never even told my mother about it because I didn't want to let her know that her awesome generosity had gone to waste. When she would ask how come she hasn't seen me playing it lately, I would tell her I was saving to buy a new game for it.

A few years later I found out who stole it. It was an older kid at the school whose brother spilled the beans years later. When I went over his house for a party during my high school years, he showed me where it was, hiding in his big brothers drawer. I knew it was mind because of my initials under the battery compartment. I didn't take it back. I left it there. I don't know why.

At 26 years of age, I can safetly say one of the greatest childhood memories I have is opening the package to my brand new NGPC, and sitting outside in the afternoon playing Metal Slug for hours and hours.
