No More Mom and Pop Shops

Seems like more and more local game stores are closing down. And my town has been hit hard with a recent blow. You would think it’s the economy but there are Gamestops popping up left and right. Today after paying the rest of my college tuition I thought I could celebrate by buying some old video games. When I arrived at my favorite mom and pop shop, Control Pad, it was too late. They had been replaced by a store that sold porcelain dolls. I was furious, but wait there was hope. I’ve heard of another store not too far.

This next store was possibly the worst game store in history. When I got there I saw a bunch of video game boxes, like old NES ones. I thought, “Wow they sell some quality shit here.” I was wrong. First, I ask how much they sold a NES for, they answered 75 dollars. I quickly walked away. Then after seeing a “sold out” sign, I asked if the game came with the boxes. They started laughing; I understand the boxes make games more expensive, what I didn’t understand is why if they didn’t come with the boxes were the selling Contra for 65 dollars.

I this store is all that is left around here, I’m sticking to Amazon and Gamestop. I want to support local shops but not when they are overpriced and rude. Hopefully I can find some good deals at the occasional thrift shop and yard sale.

Sad. Though, I never really had a mom and pop game shop (awesome rhyming there), it still sucks to see those disappear.

I never went to a mom and pop games store before. I always wanted to go to one though. This news is sad, but a store that sells retro games for over $50 automatically qualifies as a bad business. Strangely enough, I buy my games from Gamestop and Amazon too. I prefer buying used on Amazon; competition drives the prices down a bit.

I know of a couple of mom-and-pop shops left in the East Bay -- one in Alameda, one in Antioch. I never get to them, though. All my games come from either folks on Craigslist, Amazon, or Best Buy. If I ever make bank, I would like to open a comic-video game-ice cream-candy shop.
