As we approach the 10th anniversary of Pokemon: The First Movie, we must solemnly remember that long before politicians were warning parents of Manhunt and Carmageddon, everyone was worried about the evils of Ash Ketchum and his cuddly cohort Pikachu [via Everything is Terrible]:

What starts off as an admonitory speech about Pokemon quickly devolves into a tirade against Dungeons and Dragons, prime-time television, and the Internet. At this point, I'm eager to cite Poe's Law, the adage which claims that it's impossible to parody fundamentalism without someone mistaking it for the real thing. But it's unlikely that this sermon was a farce on radical Christianity because the man who gave it delivered it in the '80s, long before we all fully recognized the power of "trolling."

Without knowing it, this nameless pastor may have initiated the two-decade-long trend of politicizing video games -- a trend which Joe Lieberman, Hillary Clinton, and Jack Thompson eagerly followed. When it comes to theology and public policy, video games have had a hard time escaping the vise-grip which once confined the likes of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Manson. As time moves on, however, the public has grown to view video games as simple, harmless entertainment. While the crazies of the world have selected new, equally innocent victims to harass, I'll always cherish the words of this pastor: "Pokemon is a game that teaches children how to enter into the world of witchcraft." I'm speechless.

This video is amazing. I love the build-up, and you can see where he's going with everything.

Everyone needs to watch to the very end, too. Great edit at the end. :)

The greatest thing is that right after the 'pokemon=witchcraft' line their is a shot of a particularly vapid looking woman nodding her head as if she is totally understanding what is said....but she keeps nodding her head endlessly. It's like she's a fundamentalist bobble head.

I am shocked and amazed at the lengths people will go to in order to be afraid of harmless things just to have an excuse to not like them. You can tell your child 'oh i don't like you playing this.' but it just doesn't have the impact of 'SATAN IS TRYING TO CONTROL YOU WITH THE POWER OF THESE CUTE LOVEABLE CREATURES! FEAR FOR YOUR IMMORTAL SOUL!!!!!' i guess.

Jeffrey, I also noticed that woman nodding her head like a drone. But what made me happy was that her husband (the guy next to her) was stoically staring at the pastor thinking, "not this shit again".

I'm rarely amazed by the internet. I've seen it all. But this...this is special. I'm glad everyone liked it.

Jesus H. Christ... The things that get carried out in your name. Wars, bigotry, TELEVANGELISM. Religion function on fear and herding the fearful, but this is just insane. Pick your battles, bro.

By the way, BEST HEADLINE EVER. While I agree the Pokemon is not a channel for the devil, I do believe that Jigglypuff is f&%*ing evil.

"Demons take it quite seriously. Satan takes it quite seriously."

I heard Satan has a killer Blastoise.

Also, I didn't realize playing D&D; was the first step to joining a gang. Do Crips and Bloods resolve most of their disputes through fantasy role-playing games?

Having spent a fair amount of time in church growing up, I can confirm that this is not at all uncommon. Unfortunate and a little bit scary, but hilarious.

There's no way this was shot in the eighties, though. More like early-to-mid nineties. A guy like this wouldn't know about the internet that early. He even references the "Dungeons and Dragons game of the eighties" at 1:53.

Still, too early for trolling and far too moronic not to be real.

Yeah, this has to be the mid-nineties; Pokemon wasn't released in the states until 1996 or so. Then again, maybe this preacher is a true prophet sent by god to forewarn us of the impending wrath of Pikachu.
