OneBigGame: Non-Profit Publisher Aims to be Live Aid for Games

Ever wonder what a Flash game by Will Wright, Peter Molyneux, or Shigeru Miyamoto would look and play like? You might just find out. Non-profit publisher OneBigGame is working with industry veterans to create a series of games across different formats (PC/XBLA/PSN/iPhone), and then donating the proceeds to Save the Children and Starlight Children's Fund.

Inspired by Bob Geldof's Band Aid/Live Aid concerts, Martin De Ronde walked away from the Killzone franchise and the developer he founded, Guerrilla Games, to create OneBigGame. De Ronde says another ten titles are already in development; Dave Perry is remaking one of his favorite ZX Spectrum games, PaRappa the Rapper creator Masaya Matsuura is working on music/rhythm iPhone game WINtA, and adventure genre pioneer Charles Cecil is making an adventure game version of Minesweeper (!).

The first title under the OneBigGame umbrella, Chime, comes from Zoë Mode, the makers of SingStar, and features music from Moby, Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), and three other unannounced artists.

Imagine Tetris in reverse -- you want to fill a space with blocks rather than clear it -- with the beat line from Lumines and a splash of the dynamic music generation of Rez. You place blocks to create 3x3 (or larger) quads, which, when hit by the beat line, trigger differently pitched music samples based on the quad's position.

Chime is due out on Xbox Live Arcade in early December (price TBD). Zoë Mode's working for free, and all PR, quality assurance, and localization is also provided pro bono for all OneBigGame titles.

Most titles will appear on OneBigGame's website, which will eventually relaunch as a games portal, as free-to-play Flash games. More robust versions may then move over to XBLA, PSN, and other platforms.

Developers that work with OneBigGame license their IP to the company for six months to a year, and then are free to reissue the same or updated versions of their games wherever they like.

The next titles in the OneBigGame library are set to roll out in early 2010. Bring on that Minesweeper remake!

I'm totally ready for a minesweeper adventure game. I fell in love with it the day I figured out you could beat expert every time with almost never making a guess.

Nonprofit publishing? That's the coolest thing I've heard in a long time.

Martin De Ronde is the MAN!!! But I guess Bob Geldoff has nothing to do with this? I picture a huge concert with these games being shown on a big screen.
