Okay so what's wrong with me.
I'm bored with first person shooters, actually bored implies I was at one time a huge fan. Yes I liked Goldeneye on the 64 but I was more into the main game than multiplayer. Half-life fantastic but also quite slow paced and had a great story so not really like most FPS. Halo? The first one was cool but not the blow me away experience I expected, though the AI was impressive.
So where am I going, well I played and finished COD 4 the other day and at first I really couldn't see what all the fuss was about, I mean this is a multiple game of the year title, but I knew it was short so I persevered, and once I'd got through the game I realised I didn't actually enjoy playing it. I liked the story and the cut scenes and the presentation but the running around with a gun shooting, whilst being hand held by my Sgt was just kind of okay. Compare this to Dead Space or No More Heroes, or Uncharted All 3rd person games which I absolutely loved, in fact dead space is the first time I've ever finished a game then set about playing it again straight away and finishing it a second time!
So what do I get from a third person game I don't from a FPS, for a start there's the field of vision, you can see more what's going on around you in a 3PG, there's also a seperation from the character and which allows you to actually feel something for the character ,you can see them get hurt, run away etc. Not just slump to the floor with a mist of red on the screen and think "where the hell did that come from!" I guess with a 3PG it allows you to be someone else, with a personality of their own, it's more escapist than Nathan whatever his name is in Resistance which you never see or hear.
COD 4 -SPOILER-
The execption to the rule is the fantastic scene in COD4 after the nuclear explosion where you play someone who dies as part of the story, this I found as genius but again backs up what I said about the cut scenes and presentation being excellent.
SPOILER END
So am I as much in the minority as I believe I am? I will play an outstanding FPS to see what all the fuss is about but I'm in no rush to, I'll rent or get it when it's cheap, whereas Uncharted 2 I'm there on launch day.
