EVO 2011 Day 2 (Marvel vs. Capcom, BlazBlue, Tekken)

Day 2 of Evolution 2011 -- the largest fighting-game tournament in the world -- is underway. Today the worlds best players will compete in Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, the only team-based game in the event, Tekken 6, the only game with true 3D movement, and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 2, the only sprite-based 2D game.

All games begin at 8 a.m. PST and run until 11 p.m. The times are three hours later on the east coast.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds

This 3-on-3 fighter is the most punishing game at the tournament, as the long, damaging combos here will make you pay for bad defense or using your teammate's assist attacks poorly. Right now, many teams favor Wolverine’s relentless offense and the game-changing power of Phoenix, as both use MVC3's X-Factor power up to great effect. This game is still very young, however, and some players have been saving their best tactics for this event.

This competition will also showcase some regional rivalries. American players considered Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to be “their game” where not even the Japanese masters could beat them in. Now top players like Daigo Umehara and Mago are participating, and Tokido has already won a major MVC3 tournament in the U.S. EVO will also have a 10-man round-robin exhibition between the best of the East Coast and West Coast after the main tournament.

Sunday: Grand Finals for all games.

Note: Evolution 2011 runs double-elimination tournaments. If someone loses in the main bracket, they are sent to a loser's bracket where they can still win the competition but have to defeat more opponents.
