Bitmob X-Com: Week Six: Slow Progress and Another Forest Fight

This is Bitmob X-Com's sixth episode. If you're new, read the announce post first, then catch up on the exploits of the community with the firstsecondthird, fourth, and fifth (parts one and two) episodes. Follow the whole series with the Bitmob X-Com tag.

X-Com -- the last line of defense against the alien menace. You are the brave men and women who will fight the invaders and drive them from our planet. The organization will arm you with rifles, heavy cannons, and bad language so that your courage knows no bounds. Suit up -- we’re going to war!

First things first: Week six is late, I know. I was more busy than usual last week, and I pushed the latest Bitmob X-Com update to the weekend.

Now, to recap the end of week five: We just finished our second terror mission in the city of Lagos, which went reasonably well but also incurred significant losses. Rest in peace, soldiers.

We left off with the Skyranger carrying myself, James DeRosa, Jay Henningsen, Rob Koulakjian, Dan Hsu, Nicholas Feinig, Michael Rousseau, Guillaume Favreau, Brett Bates, Juan Moreno, and Jason Honaker up north to a landed UFO. I expect resistance from the aliens to be in full force.

We face the alien menace in a dense forest once again -- these crafty invaders will have plenty of places to hide. Can we all see the mission's end in one piece? Read on to page two!

I'd let it ride with the Heavy Laser.

Then... maybe we should start working on Heavy Plasma (and clip) for our interceptor craft. It would take a while to complete, but I feel like we're going to start getting outgunned in the air pretty soon.

Also, you should start putting the ranks of the soldiers in the lineup if it's not too much trouble. I was recently reading that high-ranking soldiers make good "rear commanders" and provide a morale boost by staying alive (e.g. in the Skyranger) and could make use of motion scanners or mind probes. Ultimately it would be nice to interrogate a psionic alien so we can start training in psi powers.

My latest thoughts from beyond the grave. OoooOOOOOooo

Good idea, Jeremy. I'll try to update with that later tonight.

High-ranking soldiers make good rear commanders when they have horrible psionic defense. We won't know about our inherent psi abilities until Ethereals show up around May in game time. Right now, we're in the middle of March. They'd be perfect for mind probes but not motion scanners, which only have a 15-square radius. Our scouts will need to carry those.

The heavy plasma will lead to the plasma cannon, which we'd need to research for our interceptors (and build in our manufacturing plants) before we could use them. I agree with you -- the large-class UFOs will start to show up on radar soon (supply ships, terror ships, and battleships), and they'll one-shot our human-tech jet fighters.

At first, I honestly thought Jeremy's comment said "I'd let her ride my Heavy Laser"...

If heavy laser is doing well, then stick with that.

Totally stick with the Heavy Laser then Heavy Plasma, but I still believe  we need laser tanks soon or Chrysalids are going to be our downfall. All in all shaping up well.

RIP, bro.

Rob, how many more rookies do you think you'll need? I may have to start enlisting my extended family!

About research, is there really a point to researching both Laser and Plasma? I say screw the laser! My ghost wants H. Plasma! And a Navigator!

Looks like research votes are tied between the heavy laser and plasma -- remember to vote for two options! (Ahem, Guillermo and Dan!)

Alejandro, if they write on Bitmob, they're welcome to enlist!

Four voters? You're killing me, guys. I'll let this ride another night.

I always knew I'd be a good scout!

Heavy laser. You have a pretty large manufacturing wing compared to research. Take an example from military contractors. If it's good enough to blow up aliens, certainly it's good enough to sell to the general public.

Can we get a "I'll let her ride my Heavy Laser" shirt made?
