DICE Escalates Its Rivalry with Infinity Ward

It's no secret -- DICE and Infinity Ward share an amiable rivalry. After all, the two companies are responsible for some of the most successful infantry-combat simulators on the planet. But when DICE dropped a new promotional video for Bad Company 2, their simple rivalry devolved into adolescent name-calling.

Before you check out the video below, watch Modern Warfare 2's original PSA here. In case you're still confused, allow me to clear the air after the jump.

Prior to the release of Modern Warfare 2, its developers released an Internet-only promotional video. In it, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels warned viewers of the growing issue of "grenade spamming." One week after the video's launch, Hamels and the Phillies lost to the New York Yankees in the playoffs.

Then comes C.C. Sabathia, a fan of the Battlefield series and the Yankees' top starting pitcher, with the explicit aim of completing DICE's campaign of harassment and mockery.

While I'm sure this video was produced long before the news of Activision and Infinity Ward's falling out, it still seems somewhat petty and immature. Who knows, maybe you thought it was amusing and in good taste. Your opinions are always welcome!

All I'm certain of is that Bad Company 2 has exploding buildings. I like exploding buildings [via Kotaku].

I agree. Maybe it's in good fun, but it seems petty that DICE should respond to its competitors so brazenly and openly. A little subtlety goes a long way, my Swedish friends!

With news of the Activision layoffs still fresh in our minds, it seems like DICE is just kicking Infinity Ward while it's down.

Ah, I don't think it's petty at all. It's pretty funny and harmless.

I think it is slightly childish, but I also think it is all in good fun. Just because these companies are multi-million dollar buisnesses doesn't mean they have to be buisness-like all the time. I also think a good amount of rivalry/competition between two good publishers will hopefully benefit the gamers. It doesn't hurt that DICE is giving us a free map pack, while IW is charging for theirs. Hopefully, this will make IW think carefully about their number 1 status. Although, I am sure Activision could give two-sh#ts about the whole thing.

I like it a lot.  I think it makes for good press. It would be neat if more companies started doing it. How cool would it be if Laura Croft and Nathan Drake started playing pranks on each other?

I enjoyed it. The timing could be better but its not like its taking shots at the developers themselves. Well unless you consider the friendly fire to be a reference to Activision. Buncha buttholes.

I'm with you Nick; it would be great if more companies would get some fun rivalries going.

I thoroughly enjoyed it! Very funny.

I actually thought this was really funny, and not petty in any way.  This video just illustrates the fact that it's not cool to use "FAGS" as some sort of cleverly devised but derogatory acronym, while at the same time informing newcomers to Bad Company 2 that grenade spamming isn't very effective.

I agree with Dan and K.M. -- I don't think the video is anything even closely resembling "adolescent name-calling" on DICE's part. Instead, DICE is cleverly taking Infinity Ward to task for their unacceptable use of "FAGS."

I'm actually surprised you made no mention of that, Omar.
