Frank West: Journalist as Hero
Untitled

Remember the glory days of the newsman? Men like Edward R. Murrow, John Drainie, Walter Cronkite, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. These are men who dared to challenge the paradigm and even authority when it needed to be. Whether it was standing up to the fear mongering of Joe McCarthy, supporting the civil rights movement, or showing the shocking truth of Vietnam and Watergate, they stood their ground and did what ever was necessary to uncover the truth.

It would seem that there would never be another example of “journalist as hero.” At least within the confines of our own reality.

In 2006, Keji Inafune (creator of Mega Man) produced a little game for the Xbox 360, known as Dead Rising. Inafune wanted the game’s protagonist to have an everyman type of appeal. So he decided to take away the superhuman and overly handsome aspect of the typical video game hero. He wanted someone who the player could relate to. It would work quite well but Inafune did not count on the character becoming a ficitonal example of what those in the journalism field call, “journalist as hero.”

Photo journalist, Frank West is a man who has covered wars and has seen the very worst of what humanity has to offer. When the small town of Willamette, Colorado was sealed off by the Colorado National Guard, West jumped at the chance to get to the bottom of the situation. But for all of the terrifing things he has witnessed during his career, he was still unprepared for what he was getting himself into.

West finds himself at the center of a zombie infestation. He is forced to fight for his own survival, as he tries to uncover the truth behind the failed government experiment which caused the outbreak. As well as rescue the remaining survivors from not only the zombies but the Special Forces who are trying to cover up the infestation.

West managed to survive a hellacious 72 hours within the confines of the Willamette Mall, usuing just about any consumer product he could get his hands on as a potential weapon.

This is what makes the West’s character so appealing. Not only is he able to use a combination of both brain and brawn to overcome what is bascially Hell itself but he is also an average guy.

West isn’t this big, brawny superhero but rather a scruffy, regular person who is just trying to do his job and ultimately the right thing. Inafune helped create a great character which gamers can identify with.

With the hords of zombies eliminated, a group of innocent civilians rescued, and an evil government cover up exposed by the media, West can be considered a shining example of Journalist as Hero. Even if he isn’t “technically” real.

This just in.

Journalist finds himself in brawling clusterF$&K! More at 11.

But seriously, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom looks wicked awesome (if only I had a Wii) and the additon of Frank West makes it look even more awesome.

This eveyman will now have to prove he is worthy of the journalist as hero monicker all over again as he takes on superheros, robots, demons, samurais, and martial arts masters. From the looks of things, it will likely be an enjoyable experience.

When I first heard of Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, my reaction was "WTF?". The more I see it, the more it looks like some real crazy fun times. Everything about it seems so ridiculous (Like the weird Tatsunoko characters and the 6.6..BILLION DAMAGE!!!) but ridiculous in a good way. I think I'll be picking it up.

Hey! You totally forgot about the silent hero of Pokemon Snap! Unless he talked during the game, I can't remember anymore.

Also, the male/female avatar in PS3's Afrika are photojournalists. They may not be fighting zombies, or anything at all, but they do the tough jobs that few would dare to try...like sitting in a tree for half an hour in order to get a close-up of a giraffe for a bottled water company.

Wait a minute! Haven't you ever played a Superman game? Or what about Spider-man? Both are photojournalists like Frank West, and unlike him they have two jobs!

@ Alex I didn't an N64 growing up so I missed out on most N64 and I haven't even heard about Afrika but they both sound like interesting examples.

But Superman and Spiderman are not fair examples. As much as I love Superman and Spiderman, they are both super heroes and the point of highlighting West was because he was an averavge doing the best he can in an extrodinary situation. As much as the identities of Peter Parker and Clark Kent are average guys, they are superpowered beings and don't have the same realism that West has.

Don't stress out over it, I was pretty much giving joke examples in response to the article. Did I not come off as jovial? I meant to come off as jovial.
Although, you DID get money in Spider-Man for the Genesis when you set up your camera for the boss fights. That was pretty cool.

@ Alex. I do remember that feature. That was pretty sweet. I didn't mean to seem like I was stressing. For that I'm sorry. You did bring up some solid points though. I like having disscussions here on Bitmob. People on here are so much more mature than other message boards. I like chatting with you on this topic. I learn a lot and discovered some interesting titles. If I ever get a PS3 I'll have to check out Afrika. I didn't know that the kid in Snap was a journalist. The more you know.

No worries man. 8) Sorry again if I came off as strong. I didn't mean to. I think the next I do something like this I will give some examples of similar cases. Thanks man. That is a great idea!

@Ryan. Thanks! Just wanted to make sure everyone knew where I was coming from, that's all.

There are a lot of characters I am sure I'm missing, though I am not sure if they count. There seem to be more games where you play as a photojournalist rather than just a boring old regular journalist. Elena in the Uncharted series is a journalist, and although she is an NPC in the single player, she can certainly hold her own in the online co-op missions of Uncharted 2.

I also imported a fantastic PS3 game called Aquanaut's Holiday, which is the sequel to a little known PS1 title. The PS3 is region free, so it worked out great. The Chinese version of the game is translated (not very well...) into English. Anyway, you play a journalist in that game as well, and much like Afrika there is no combat. You just swim around and complete missions, usually involving taking pictures of fish. The best part is that the story is chock-full of Hideo Kojima levels of insanity.
One word. Fish Memes!
