Inspect The Gadget

I must admit as a child I would always dream of having the right gadget for the right moment – why? Because I felt it would give me the edge to squeeze out that little bit more!

I’m one of those terrible consumers that likes peripherals. Flight Sims need flight sticks, car racing games need driving wheels, beat um games need arcade fight sticks. If I don’t have the peripheral I feel slightly cheated in the genre (though my failure has more to do with a lack of skill rather than the lack of gadgets).

It pretty much started with flightsticks for my pc. During my X-wing addiction, I remember splurging on a flight stick with throttle, flap and rudder control, 360 degree twist stick with several different coloured buttons scattered all over to make it look bad-ass. It was a ‘Topgun’ stick to be proud of.

As I raced through blasting Tie fighters and defending my Correllian Corvettes, It made me feel as if I was ‘Topgun’. The peripheral added that extra something which helped me immerse into the game – the keyboard just wasn’t adequate enough to help me push the X-wing to the limit.

Today, most on-line games can be enjoyed without a mic (as do flight sims games without a flight stick) but I really do think something is missing if you don’t have that little accessory.

I own an earpiece but I’m not happy with it. I made a simple mistake of believing ‘All blue tooth ear pieces are equal’ only to discover “some are more equal than others.”

I own a Samsung WEP210 bluetooth earpiece – please don’t make the same mistake.

Firstly, it has no ear hook (though you can buy one). Why doesn't it ship with the hook in the first place?

Secondly, the ear piece itself is uncomfortable

Thirdly, add the fact that it falls out of your ear regularly it means you have a gadget that isn’t fit for purpose.

Fourth, I’m too cheap to buy another earpiece whilst this still works.

Ultimately, I find myself looking like Rambo as I secure my earpiece with a bandanna.

In the end, my thrifty lazy attitude means I’m forever stuck with this inferior piece until it conveniently goes missing or breaks.

I’ve always been quite good at buying unnecessary add-ons but with the ear piece, I made one big mistake – I assumed rather than explored.

Has anyone else bought a peripheral or accessory that failed to live up to their intended expectation?

Dude, I've gone through three pairs of bluetooth headphones (trying them out at different intervals as the technology improves) and have been routinely disappointed.

I can't help it though, I'll be buying BT headphones every time new models are released in the hopes that someone gets it right.

I hear your pain Mark,

You would think with all these advances, they could consider developing something that means the simple criteria of functional and comfortable. We'll just keep searching, but if you do find a gem, please let me know ;)
